“Spirituality is recognizing and celebrating that we are all inextricably connected to each other by a power greater than all of us, and that our connection to that power and to one another is grounded in love and compassion. Practicing spirituality brings a sense of perspective, meaning and purpose to our lives.” Brené Brown
“Fortunately, some are born with spiritual immune systems that sooner or later give rejection to the illusory worldview grafted upon them from birth through social conditioning. They begin sensing that something is amiss, and start looking for answers. Inner knowledge and anomalous outer experiences show them a side of reality others are oblivious to, and so begins their journey of awakening. Each step of the journey is made by following the heart instead of following the crowd and by choosing knowledge over the veils of ignorance.” Henri Bergson
Spirituality in essence – Is our essence as living beings.
“Everything is energy and energy is you and me” – a lyric from the beautiful song ‘Everything’ by English band Anathema summarizes this notion very well.
In order to explain what spirituality might be in the best way possible I will use my own personal experiences as well as the insights from some of the world’s most forward thinking spiritual teachers to have graced the earth.
Consciousness is what spirituality is fundamentally all about.
My understanding is that everything in existence is conscious or has consciousness within it. This consciousness connects us all intimately at our most fundamental and root level (just as quantum physics proves) regardless of whether we are “conscious” of this fact or not.
Consciousness can be regarded similarly as ‘Awareness’.
Incidentally consciousness is one of the greatest mysteries known to mankind. Quantum physics has in depth and profound explanations of consciousness through such things as the unified field or so called, ‘Super-String Field.’
Many independent scientific institutes already have an understanding and insight into what consciousness is and how it functions in the human body, specifically activations via the pineal gland in our brains.
Many prevalent studies have been done since the 50’s and 60’s into consciousness and its origins such as; psychedelic phenomena, transpersonal psychology, out of body experiences – OBEs, psychedelic therapy, near death experiences and past life phenomena, as well as eastern beliefs such as reincarnation.
A beautifully imaginative and relatively short read on the experiences of consciousness from the point of view of neuroscientist, Dr Eben Alexander can be read in the highly acclaimed publication ‘Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife’ (2012)
“The knowledge of enlightenment can easily be lost. The techniques to experience pure consciousness – unbounded awareness can easily be lost. Not because they’re difficult or complicated, but because they’re so subtle. In order to transcend to experience unbounded awareness, consciousness has to settle down completely.” Ph.D John Hagelin, Professor of physics at Maharishi University of Management
I believe that we cannot live optimally fulfilling lives without some of the many spiritual practices incorporated into our lives.
“Spirituality is not a luxury but a hard earthly necessity. It’s too late to not be spiritual. Our spiritual development is no longer just about our individual wellbeing, but about the health and welfare of nature, animals and the earth”
Having a variety of spiritual practice has been linked to longer lives.
You don’t have to be a specific religion or even believe in God to qualify for this. Having a reverence for life and believing in something more than yourself is enough to enjoy the benefits of a longer life.
Taking care of our bodies, Surroundings and the earth, practicing traditions such as; meditation, Yoga, contemplation and prayer all aid in giving us great insights into the nature of reality and ourselves and a great sense of stability and roundedness.
One never becomes enlightened – one is enlightened. One simply remembers it. It is not an achievement, but only a recognition. You are as much enlightened as I am, nothing is missing.
You have not lost your god, it is impossible to lose him. He is our very life; without him we cannot exist for a single moment. “So the question is not how to find him. The question is how to become more alert, aware of that which already is the case.”
It is important to remember that in being ‘Spiritual’ you do not need to act in any forced or unnatural way.
As author Dr Wayne Dyer explains – “I am a human being, not a human doing. Don’t equate your self-worth with how well you do things in life. You aren’t what you do. If you are what you do, then when you don’t…you aren’t.”
Authenticity is truly the most important factor to spirituality – therefor becoming our most authentic self-possible is the ultimate goal.
The emphasis in our lives as spiritual beings having a human experience should lie in ‘being’ – being Happy, being content, being grateful and even being sad at times. But mainly following our bliss.
Spirituality is less about ‘doing’ and more about ‘being’ our truest most authentic self everywhere we go…
Once we rediscover this innate knowledge within ourselves – that we are spiritual beings inhabiting physical forms (i.e. – the body) having a human experience – then how can we not see ourselves as anything other than that which we are? How can we not be something we fundamentally already are at a source level?
It’s simple – We cannot.
If we were all actively conscious human beings, meaning totally aware of the present moment rather than being continually influenced and conditioned by our past or ideas of a preconceived future – then the Earth would positively be heaven for all.
Stress, anxiety, fear, loathing and injustice could not prevail and triumph in a truly conscious and self-aware society or culture, for that would be conscious insanity.
A bold statement, however a completely present sense of ‘collective-consciousness’ would instantly change our perceived reality from that of fear to one of love and appreciation.
Knowing and understanding that we are all in fact one, originating from the same source of creation is undoubtedly Spirituality.
“Only one spirit moves through all life everywhere and everything is alive. So when a cycle of 25,625 years comes to an end and a new beginning emerges, Perhaps we should see and know the sacredness in the moment of our everyday lives.
Remember who YOU are in the dance of cycles, And You immediately win the game of life.
Whats your prize? Oneness reveals itself All around you And Within you.
Death is mastered
Immortality becomes reality.
And YOU come full circle when you realize that what is all around you, nature, Is also within you.
Do you know you are filled with stars!”
Drunvalo Melchizedek, The Mayan Ouroboros
“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” Oliver Wendell Holmes
For many of the greatest spiritual teachers on earth, the realization of this divine oneness of all things has only been achieved after succumbing to great depressions and lows. This suffering as author Eckhart Tolle explains, has a noble purpose – The evolution of consciousness and the burning up of the ego.
Depression should be fundamentally viewed as the beginning of a process of vast healing potential.
We allow ourselves to mourn or be sad, and once we have completed this time of sadness, to set ourselves free from it.
It is also our chance to gather strength, energy and the focus needed to propel ourselves forward. This depression in terms of a sense of spirituality is also known as; “Cracking the shell of the “Ego” – the Ego being the victim mindset & attitude many of us often adopt.
This in turn provides a rebirthing of our true, luminous & infinite selves and these are the foundations of Eckhart Tolle’s beautiful book – ‘A New Earth’ (2005)
It is important to understand as human beings that we all affect one another through our intentions and thoughts and accordingly create negative or positive energy patterns as a result – Therefor spirituality is as much about personal responsibility and sovereignty, as anything else.
“The very act of understanding is a celebration of joining, merging, even if on a very modest scale, with the magnificence of the Cosmos.
Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality”. Carl Sagan
Studies from scientific institutions such as the Heart Math Institute are now telling us directly that the magnetic field of the human heart can be measured upto several feet away from the body and that the heart has a long term memory capacity independent to that of the brain. This means that people up to several feet away from one another can determine the signature of their emotions.
“Emotional information is actually coded and modulated into these fields. By learning to shift our emotions, we are changing the information coded into the magnetic fields that are radiated by the heart, and that can impact those around us. We are fundamentally and deeply connected with each other and the planet itself.” Rolin McCratey , Ph.D, Director of Research at the Institute of Heartmath
This and many other worthy scientific studies such as the Maharishi effect, measuring the effects of group meditators during full moons which scientifically reported the decline in crime rates, as well as research coming out of Harvards medical school telling us that just 8 weeks of meditation has positive affects on the brains memory, our sense of empathy, and stress reduction as well as a completely improved sense of self demonstrate to us all that in the 21st century – spirituality must conquer our inhibiting technological advancement, and how it deserves a front seat in our lives as human beings.
In order to understand spirituality or rather, to rediscover it, we must simply go within ourselves to seek the truth once again.
If ever there was a “universal truth teaching” towards a life of spirituality, it would undoubtedly be to not seek outside for happiness, but seek within – everything needed lies within the human anatomy.
This is also what is meant by the Egyptian proverb – The kingdom of heaven is within you; and whosoever shall know himself shall find it.
It is through conscious-awareness and paying attention to the finer details in every day life that we begin to see the great flaws in our society and begin to change ourselves to help aid in the greater good for the planet.
The development of compassion and gratitude to all of life and a ‘higher perspective’ is the authenticity which leads us to our spirituality as human beings.
It is a life – long process and let no one tell you that they are more enlightened than you yourself right now – for they are acting as a false idol with little humility.
Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood.
Through beginning to see our divinity and interconnectedness we can understand things on a greater, deeper level.
Simply holding beliefs does not make us better people, only actions can do that.
Spiritual beings are who we are at a source level – where we come from, and return to. Realms of unimaginable beauty.
We may shut it out and hide it for some time, much like the sun but we cannot forget it altogether, and the more we ignore our hearts intentions the further we drift away from our spirit or ‘Higher Self’.
This is what we are experiencing collectively in our world today, the result of millions of people who desperately need reconnecting.
Now is the time to rediscover our spirituality and become our most authentic selves possible.
